Hello,
I am running a report in Cognos 8.1.
It works fine when running in HTML.
It works fine when running in PDF if I save the report.
But, when I run in PDF to "View the report now", it churns away and gives the following error message:

Error message:
RSV-BBP-0021

The operation 'getOutput' is not allowed at this time.

RSV-SRV-0042 Trace back: RSReportService.cpp(644): RSException: CCL_CAUGHT: RSReportService::process() RSReportServiceMethod.cpp(177): RSException: CCL_RETHROW: RSReportServiceMethod::process(): reportGetOutput_Request RSASyncSession.cpp(273): RSException: CCL_THROW: RSASyncSession::processGetOutputRequest()

Per a post on the Cognos knowledgebase, I made sure that all the data items where checked in the properties of the list, but that did not resolve the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone,

we encounter the same problem described in the message above. Unfortunately, we are not able to find a solution and nobody replied to this thread yet.

Can somebody help us with this?

Thanks all for your time,

Mario

Hello, one item that you could check into is the amount of data that is being returned. When a report is executed as HTML it returns data piece by piece because you have the ability to page the data. I believe that this is called a low affinity request. However, when you choose PDF or Excel then all of the data must be returned at once. I believe that this is called a high affinity request.

So...see if running as Excel gives the same error and then investigate your server settings for high and low affinity requests. This is related to optimizing the performance of your server. Both values should add up to 5, and it's just a matter of which request you give more weight.

I have a solution that was implemented recently. This will apply to you only if you have a prompt situation.

When your prompt is noted as "Optional" you cannot put a (Collection) of default selections in the prompt properties or else you won't be able to view PDF or XLS data.

That's it!
