Hello

I'm very new to Cognos 8 but have a fair bit of experience with Cognos 7.

How do tranformer generated cubes work?

I appreciate that you can create them in C7 and publish them within the C8 environment, allowing reporting
How do you create new cubes though?
Do these need to be created in C7 and linked into the C8 environment or can you create them in C8, if so, what's the transformer equivalent?
Or, am I missing a fundamental point as to the way C8 works?

Thanks

Damian.

You still create cubes using transformer as you are custom to.
In Cognos 8 the product is called "Cognos 8 Olap Modeling" which is a rebranded Transformer 7.4 cdrom.
The only benefit for using 7.4 over 7.3 MRx is the automated optimising of the cube for use with Analysis studio.
With previous version cubes, you need to manually run the pcoptimise command per cube, before they are optimised to be used in C8.

Thanks, that sounds good to me

Does Cognos 8 OLAP modeling come as standard?

No idea, you would need to doublecheck with your cognos account manager of what the content of the C8 box will be that arrives when you buy it.
(in most boxes i have seen, it was present, but doublecheck to be sure)

crn and C8 are basically the same. you hand rsserver an mdl file ( the model ), the working and cube(publish) dirs, and a few other variabls. We build the new cube in one dir and rename and move the current one to a backup dir a day.
Once that's done we move the new cube into public dir.

Our build produces one 5.6gb blob, that requires 9.6Gb of work space for 7-11 hours. In a week if all goes well with tommorrow's deployment and ldap changes we will be moving to 4 cubes. This may help optimise the builds on the db side, I am hoping they will share some data in the oracle buffer cache and speed things up.

Typically C7 and C8 can use the same cube but C7 users may not have access to all of the data.

C8 is a much easier critter to work with because reports and the studios are part of the app. The startups and shutdowns are consistant and predicable vs the crn steps. I doesn't leave procs laying around that you will have to kill .

You can update the crn content store to create a c8 content store.

We have just finished a CRC to C8 transition. The average report user will need a real push to learn to use C8 features like the report and analysis studios. The more savy crn users may be able figure most of it out.

We have about 200 users and only recently had to adjust the connections setups.

Our platforms are all Sun 480s @ solaris 8.

What's your hardware.

What are you using for LDAP? Any problems with configure/Cfg Mgr setups? Please let me know. Am battling strange problem with configure that Cog Support hasn't had anything to offer.

Enjoy...
