I'm unable to view mpegs. Whenever I attempt to (usually via Windows Media Player) I recieve an error "Error downloading Codec". I tried to uninstall and reinstall the codec that I have (DivX) but it's still not working (per a Google search that I did). Anyone seen this before?

The DivX codec is likely either corrupted or your computer is not a good fit for the codec. (It requires pretty handsome floating poing performance by your CPU). Download the MS Mpg Codecs, Windows MPEG-4 Video Codec V2, or even Windows MPEG-4 Video Codec V1.

bcastner: I actually downloaded another codec (different from the one that I had) and that seemed to do the trick. If the problem becomes intermittent, I'll try your suggestion. Thanks!

Can anyone explain why, I have the latest media player with all the windows updates and patches on three machines in my home network. I frequently run into mpeg or avi files that I can not play, sometimes on one machine and sometimes on another. I just downloaded an mpeg clip. When i ran it on one machine, it downloaded the codec and ran, but when I went to one of the other machines and tried to play it, I got the "error loading codec" on that machine. The machines are basically identical in performance, speed etc.. both P4's with 256 or 512 ram and 3d video cards. Why can one machine load the codec and the other cant? They are both connected to the same network, through the same internet connection. In cases like this is it possible to determine what codec the video needs and download it manually from microsoft?

any comments would be apprecited...

Bookouri,

the easiest way to find out why the file does not play is by running Gspot on the file.

* Determine what codec a file uses and what codec your system will use to play it

* Identifies MPEG (.mpg), QuickTime (.mov), RealMedia (.rm), Windows Media (.wma / .asf), Flash (.swf) and others; will attempt a DirectShow render those (and any other) file, and report either the error or detailed results.

* Offers painstaking detail about installed details codecs, culled from seven internal sources & external database of 300 video and 150 audio codec types

Another thing to try, try installing a software dvd player.

Or try installing a Codec Pack..

Like K-Lite Codec Pack ++

The reason you will find that Media Player will not download the correct codec is because alot of the codecs out there are illegal hacks off official codecs. All movie files contain a code known as the fourcc code. This code identifies what codec the movie is compressed with. For more information visit or or
contains a good piece of software for detecting the fourcc code. You can then download the correct codec manually.
