I have 4 48 port 3550 series switches with QBIC modules and one 3560G also with QBIC.

I want to setup a cluster but have one question as far as which switch should be the command switch.

The 3550 switches will be for workstations.
the 3560 will be for servers only.

which switch should be the command ?

any help would be appreciated

thanks

I would give them all an IP address, and set them up in a community. The community seems to be more reliable.

Cisco generally recommend that, depending on the switches in your cluster, that the best switches to be a command switch are the 3750 and, if one isn't present, the 3560.

That said however you chave the ability to nominate a standby command switch which I personally think is a very good idea and should be considered strongly. The standby command switch has to be the same type as the primary command switch.

Thus in your case I would consider making one of the 3550's your command switch and nominating a second 3550 as its standby. Which ones you choose is not really important however I'd probably use the one with the least users on it.
