Having rehosted my PC into a new case (floppy drive not connected as cable to short - will get on tomorrow). I get the above error. It then propmts me to press F1 to run Setup or F2 to load default values - but nothing happens nomatter which option I select.

Is this due to the floyy drive not connected or have I screwed something up!?!

Any comments?

Press and hold down the F1 key as soon as the system starts up.
If this gets you into 'CMOS Setup', then select the proper video option(EGA/VGA or VGA) in 'Standard CMOS Setup Features'(or similar).

If you still cannot enter 'CMOS Setup' by doing the above, then replace the CMOS battery.

When your system is still counting keep pressing the delete key until you the systems make keyboard lick sound due to the no of press. F1 key is diaplayed if a CMOS error is detected. When inside follow Ski's advice and also check if the floppy drive is being detected if so disable it for the mean time.

Some boards uses delete to get into the BIOS. I suggest you disable the FDD using advanced CMOS setup or similar.

Now connected the floppy drive and tied most of the above, but cant get into the BIOS setup.

Only one thing I noticed that was different from the last boot-up (i.e. before I moved the motherboard into new case) was the time taken to check RAM about 45/60 seconds. But now dont see and increment, just reports 256MB RAM OK as soon as you re-boot.

Any further comments.

If I need a new motherboard, what would be best for a 450MHz PIII processor; 2 x 128 MB SDRAM (256MB) memory and Riva TNT 16MB AGP.

When you get that error, and hit F1 nothing happens? Does the keyboard work? If you go crazy on the keyboard does it give you an error? "Keyboard error Hit F1 to continue" It should. A dumb question, do you have the keyboard connected to the correct input? I know, but I've done it.

Yes keyboard connected (I think it is not possible to swap th mouse/keyboard the wrong way - but will check again), in fact the LEDs on the keyboard come on during boot-up as normal. Then get 2 beeps and the option to press F1 or F2.

If the keyboard didn't work you would be getting error like 'Keyboard Error' but it seems to me that you might have to try another key. Can you try and hold a delete key when the system boots up?

If worse comes to worse, you can look for the clear CMOS jumper on your board and short the oposite pins then put back to where you found it. This will reset your BIOS settings and give you the original settings. The date will be wrong IE: you'll need to go back again adn change.

Anyway, if all don't work... what is the make of the COU you are using? Do you know if it is Socket 370 or Socket 7?

Good luck!

Its a Slot 1 (PIII 450MHz) on a MS6147 motherboard. The computer is 4 years old.

Will check the keyboard and clear the CMOS tonight.

The strange thing is you dont see the memory being checked during boot-up, it only reports 256Mb RA present and OK. This used to take about 50/60 seconds.

I've generally found when the bootup changes after a case change I've not paid close enough attention to the standoffs and grounds and have grounded something out so it doesn't work.
The 2 beeps are probably an additional indicator. Most give 1 beep on completion of POST.

It seems that the mouse and keyboard were the wrong way round - now sorted.

However I am now prompted for a password and I dont know it. The PC was bought from Tiny Computers 4 years ago.

It did try and shot-out the CMOS jumper (1, 2 to save and 2, 3 to clear) but still prompted for a password.

I cant believe it is this difficult to swap PC cases over.

What do I do now?

I removed the battery for 20 min then replaced it and the system ran up!

Only problem is the second hard drive is not shown in Windows Explorer. Does it need formated or anything else to make it usable?

BIOS reports it as a secondary drive.
