Hello;
I'm trying to ping from the cmd and i got a message telling me ping is not a recognized command; if i try ipconfig the same result. I'm the administrator for my machine. Internet connectivity is working fine.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance.
all the aplications are in this folder but if I double click on ipconfig I don't get any results; the icon for the aplications looks more like a non executable; only info file sort of.
I'm not very good with file system management; where do i check system integrity? I believe it to be in the Win CD?
I did that; it didn't asked for the admin password ( I got one setup)and when I typed the line it returned: "sfc" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
This is the same output I get if trying to use ping, ipconfig, traceroute, nslookup and so on!!
Nice huh?
If you are an Administrator, it wont require a password (it already knows it), if UAC is turned on it would only require you clicking on the UAC request to run the program "Elevated".
Is sfc.exe located in System32, I suspect not, based on previous form.
Is your machine 64-bit by the way, your Handle suggests it might be?
Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, start by ticking both boxes, in any further rerun.
What recovery options (CD, DVD's. Recovery Partitions, etc. come with this machine, we are heading into that area?
Under some circumstances it is possible to run a repair install and save your data, other circumstances only allow for returning to factory settings and loss of data, unless you save it beforehand, thus the question.
You still have the option of getting a sfc.exe (if it is missing) from an equivalent machine and placing it in System32 and trying to get it to run from the Elevated Command Prompt.
I do have a sfc aplication in the system32 folder but not sfc.exe in that contest, unless the aplication is an exec file; the icon looks like a business card for better lack of description! when i click on it ; it shows for a fraction of a second and desappears; this is the same case with all other aplications in this thread.
This machine is 32-bits.
i builded it last Oct. when I bought a copy of Vista Ultimate @ half price from a fellow student.
I don't recall when these problems started but cmd used to work just fine; i have used before with no problems; I can't find nothing in event viewer it is just bizarre; I do not recall doing something that will merit this behavior but I must have some how!i'm the only one who handles this machine; my wife only uses yahoo email every 15 days and that it!
Yep, that's correct. All of these are console commands, not GUI applications, so that 'business card' is the correct icon in Vista
>it shows for a fraction of a second and desappears; this is the same case with all other aplications in this thread
Yep, also correct. These are console commands - and when started by double-clicking they console that gets started only stay open as long as the command is running. And since most of the commands you are looking at require a parameter or two what actually is happening is that a console opens, displays an informative message telling you what parameters are required, at which point the command completes and the console closes. And it does this really quickly ...
(It is possible to set up shortcuts to the commands that keep the console open after the command has terminated)
In other words neither the 'business card' icon nor the showing for a fraction of a second are unexpected - they are, in fact, exactly what we would expect.
I'm afraid I have to go back to the earlier posts that have ben trying to tell you your PATH setting is wrong. You even agreed that yours looked nothing like the ones being presented as examples to you, and then ignored them ...
Can you please start a command prompt. In the resulting console window type
set path
and tell us the result (you should be able to copy and paste it from the console window)
For now though you are still missing our basic, repeated request for info concerning your path. Please provide this, and I strongly suspect that we can identify and fix your problem.
