i'm about to install a netware 6 cluster.
both servers will be new hardware.

i was going to run a trustee backup and then install one of the new servers - using the migration wizard but only for the sys to copy - this server holds ca etc so gets the ds and identity across nicely - install clustering services and then create nss volumes and copy other volumes back to it and restore trustees if necessary

first question - is it ok to install clustering services with only one server in place and then get the other one to join?

i assume the other server has a totally different name and then in the login script you use the virtual ip address instead of the server name or can you use a dns name for volume or what do people do?

any tips thoughts appreciated

If you are only going to use the Migration Wizard to copy the SYS volume and not bother with the NDS, then you may be better off just using the Consolodation Wizard to move the files to the new server.

There is no problem with isntall NCS on a single server to start with. This will make the server the master, but you will not get any functionality of a cluster until you get the second server in place. To install the second server, just run the install tool again and choose the add server to cluster (you should see it when you setup the first server).

You can use IP address or DNS name, does not matter. If you use DNS, you do need to ensure you have good DNS server. And remember, if your DNS server goes down for any reason, your hosed. Be sure you have atleast three DNS servers, and do not run them on the cluster.

In our cluster we have found it to be quicker and more reliable for us to use the Virtual Server's ip address in login scripts. But either works just don't lose your DNS as previously stated or you could have a BIG problem..
