Cluster Server Configuration

I am going to install a cluster server with 2 nodes. The Microsoft paper recommends 2 mass storage device controllers (SCSI). Will SATA ports (qty 6) built onto the mother board work in place of the SCSI controllers?

hi,
when those directives had been written, SCSI and IDE had
more or less the same performances and capabilities talking
about 1 or 2 disks
(earlier than 15 ys ago, there were also diff in size and perfs) .

SCSI had the plus in:
*) you can find much more external storage to allocate many disks
and build RAID
*) the SCSI disks, were more indicated to work in a server:
if you used a IDE disk in a server, it was more difficult
to find devices to make RAID, and if the server is on 24x7
(what normally happens), such disks broke in few months.

Today the same differences exist between SAS and SATA,
but exist some good SATA disks to be placed also in 24x7
applications, for large storage with low performance (vaults).

Remember that for a Cluster, except for system disks,
storage has to be extern, to access it from both (or more)
servers, for Quorum and any other resource that require a disk.

Then coming back to your question, you can use SATA adapter, but:

- the storage has to be external and accessed from both servers,
simultaneously, then the storage ports need to fit this.

- verify the quality (endurance) of the disks.

Thank You that cleared it up. I do have external SATA drives that I can use for both servers.
