Cluster IP addresses for MSDTC 1

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of putting together a 2 node cluster for exchange 2003. I have setup a test rig with the 2 servers and shared storage and configured the cluster as per microsoft instructions. I have tested the failover and it works fine. (Exchange not installed yet)

The next stage is to plan the installation of exchange 2003. However I am confused about the IP addressing. I have read a microsoft article regarding deploying exchange 2003 in a cluster and it states a 2 node cluster with 1 EVS would require 6 IP addresses, - 2 for each node (1 public + 1 private), 1 for cluster group and 1 for EVS. The article also describes the installation of MSDTC and here is my confusion. An IP Address resource needs to be configured for the MSDTC group and I am not sure if this uses the same IP as the cluster or if it needs another unique IP address for itself.

Can anyone advise me please?

In Exchange 2003, the MSDTC is only used during installation and service pack installation. That's why the HA guide recommends putting the MSDTC resource in the default cluster group. The default cluster group wold contain a disk resource, an IP, a name resource, and the MSDTC resorce. The MSDTC would depend on the name and disk resources (this assumes you pot the dtc log on the quorum drive).

For other application that use the MSDTC heavily, like SQL, you would want the MSDTC in it's own cluster group with an IP, name, and disk resources.

by being in the default group, MSDTC uses the same IP.
