I work on a client's pc remotely. His system is networked and uses Windows XP. I usually transfer the file to my location (faster to work on) do the work then transfer it back, when I'm done. My problem is, he forgets to close the program (QB) on his desktop, (another drive) before he leaves, so I cannot transfer the file from the main drive. Is there a way to close it remotely? I can see and access the main drive's desktop. Thank you. AP

Are you saying you can access the client's desktop remotely? If so, you should be able to see quickbooks and then close it. Another solution would be to kill the quickbooks application but that might leave the data in a weird state. Finally, you could have logon hours specified so that he will automatically get logged out when his logon hours expires.

Ah. But that's the rub. I can see the remote desktop for the pc I'm accessing (server) and QB is closed on this pc. He also has another pc connected (drive G) and QB is open there. I can see drive G through Windows Explorer but don't know how to close down the program on his pc....

Thanks

Hi alp44,

You might consider using something like TightVNC server/client as this emulates remote desktops without starting a new session, you could then exit the application from their.

Hmmm. The problem is that I can only see the desktop for the pc I'm connected to (drive) not his pc (drive G)... I don't know how to access his.

thanks

Hi alp44,

Sorry, I thought you could install TightVNC on the other machine and control it from your remote desktop session.

Thank you for the suggestion, but my client won't have me install anything on his pc (drive G) so I'm looking for a workaround using the access I have to the main pc (server)

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

You could always use the computer management snap in within MMC and close the open file on the remote computer.

You might run into problems with data loss though as the file wont have a graceful exit.

That might be a possibility. I don't mind the data loss since the client knows, he's supposed to close the program when he leaves... I'll try that. Thanks a mil!
