Hi Gurus!

I would like to ask how can I clone my rootvg onto another disk?

Thanks in advance!

Clone?? Do you wan't a copy to take off site?? Or just a live mirror??

If the latter you need an emtpy disk in the system, let's say hdisk1.
Type 'mirrorvg rootvg hdisk1' and you're almost done.

After that run 'bosboot -ad hdisk0' and change the bootlist to point at both drives.

hi ,

if you want to clone yor root disk onto another disk so that you can install/upgrade the system while it is till up and running , you can use alt_disk_install to clone rootvg onto another disk and work on it whilst users still using the normal disk. This is alvailable in AIX 4.3 and requires
filesets to be installed before you can use this command. Filesets should be on AIX 4.3 OS CD's

Have a look at this site if this is what you are looking for :-

Actually I'm planning on upgrading my OS but I think the alt_disk_install is not available on 4.2.1.

Thanks again for your inputs Gurus!

Hi Sly77,

If your rootvg consist of 1 disk only, or is mirrored but 1 disk can hold the whole mirror, you can also use mirrorvg or mklvcopy commands.

mirrorvg is suitable when your rootvg is not mirrored. In this case you have to use extendvg to include a new empty disk in rootvg, and run mirrorvg rootvg and after VG is synced, thus mirror is consistent, you have to run bosboot -a, then you can use reducevg to export new disk from rootvg. Now you have an exact copy of your rootvg.

You can also use mklycopy instead of mirrorvg to set LV-s mirrored one by one.

reducevg can't remove a non-empty disk.

Morsing: yeah. I told wrong. However there is a simple procedure to detach a mirror copy while keeping it in useable condition. I am running a lookup im my brains :) I will provide the solution a bit later.

trifo, be sure to come back with that info. sounds like something i would have to do one day. i already have a process to merge two vg into one, and it is not pretty but it works.

"...then you can use reducevg to export new disk..."

Uh, you mean `exportvg`?

Can you pls send me the procedure to merge two vg's ... I want to do the same on one of my systems

Hi All,

I found finally how to split a LV copy from a mirrored LV:

6. chapter -> Backup

Look for the command splitlvcopy!

Sly77: Although for the original quiestion: to clone the rootvg to another disk, create an mksysb tape, shut down, change the disk containing rootvg to an empty one, and boot from mksysb tape. When the system restore ends, reboot again, shut down, change disks back, and put newly created rootvg clone to a safe place (to te drawer in your desk :) )

Does this stuff help you out now?
