Have win.xp home.pent 4,1.6.40g HD, 512 ram.a2nd-HD, 100GIG.Idid clean install of xp then useing norton ghost cloned it over to 2nd HD.Also have partition comander to give doul boot,iwould like to save c:drive as a back up.useing my d: 100 g.for every day use. the problem i have is when i down load soft ware @things to D;hd.it also goe's on to c:I would like to keep them seppret if that is possable.I am new to this and am trying to learn how this is done.I thought the two drives would be on there own.Iwill appreciate any help you can give me on this., IS there a diffren't way to boot to the drive's?OR IS THIS NORMAL? A noobe

root of C:. Just open explorer and click on C: drive. Everything you can see in the right hand pane is in the root of C: (you need to have show hidden files and show system files turned on to be able to see everything).

Ghost 2003 has a feature under Ghost Utilities called Norton Ghost Boot Wizard. From there you can create a floppy which will boot machine and run ghost from dos (with a gui interface and mouse suppoert - so its easy to use). From there you can choose similar options to what you have in windows - but when you've finished the clone, you can just shut the machine down. Then you can disconnect first drive and try booting second on its own.

If you go this way to redo your clone, you don't need to do any editing of boot.ini until you've tried booting the second drive on its own, and it works ok. Once that has happened, reconnect drive 1, reboot machine (it will boot to drive 1) and edit boot.ini in the root of C: as mentioned above. If drive 2 won't boot on its own, post back (don't start editing anything or booting with both drives connected. If you need to use machine, boot with just drive 1 connected), it will almost certainly be a boot sector problem, and I can help you sort that out.

Irecloned C; TO D: turned it off be for it re booted ,disconected C;rebooted with D:I GOT black screen : NO BOOT DIVICE SYSTEM HALTED: unpluged D:booted with C: imade a boot floppy with files ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini to a newly formatted floppy disk. Not sure how it works but ididn't try it yet,Thanks for root to c: info .

With the 'D:' drive connected on its own, put XP install CD into CD drive and boot into recovery console:-

run fixmbr and fixboot, exit and reboot (to hard drive). If still no good, boot from a win98 boot floppy ( if you haven't got one). At the dos prompt, run fdisk, and use its 'set partition active' function (on the ony partition on the drive - the non-DOS one, if you're using ntfs). Exit fdisk, remove the floppy and try booting hard drive again.

If still no good, your clone can't have worked properly.

I don't know way this happend but i disconected C: conected D; was going to try win,xp cd as you said above,but when i rebooted it started up,i then conected C: rebooted it started up ok.the one thing i did was to re edit the boot.ini back to origanl,after i tryed last time and got the NO BOOT DIVICE SYSTEM HALTED error. any way after it started i edit it like you have above ,rebooted i now have disk1 or disk2 to select from i selected 2 opened fine i changed the back ground so it would be diffrent from 1 and it is ,so they seem to be independent of each outher.I can't thank you enough for all your time and patience. i sure learned a lot from you.THIS IS A GRATE FORUM THANK YOU BILL

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Disk 2" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin

to

[boot loader]
timeout=10

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Disk 2" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
