I'm just learning Illustrator and I'm having trouble. I've drew an image with the pen tool, applied a brush, and stroked outline (no fill). I have a union jack picture, and i want the outline of my image to take on the colored pattern of the union jack. I've done what is written in other clipping mask tips on here but it fills the main area and not the outline like i want.

I hope i make sense, as i haven't really got clue what i'm talking about lol

right i've sussed it kinda, by outlining the stroke, and also making compound path. lost the coal brush effect tho.

...another area to look into is opacity masking via the transparency palette (window > transparency)...

...if i read you correctly you can have a white brushed stroke, select both the image and the white stroked brush (which is on top of the image), go to the flyout menu of the transparency palette...

...from the flyout options choose "make opacity mask"...

...this allows your brush to be live, in that you can change it on the fly to any other effect you want if you decide to experiment...

...to select the mask, choose the right hand icon in the transparency palette...

...to select the image, choose the left hand icon in the transparency palette...

...essentially though, white shows and black hides...

...so any shade of black in between 0% and 100% makes a percentage mask, meaning anything underneath begins to show through the nearer to 100% you get to...
