Sporadically some of the client machines(win98 and win2k) will lose the ablility to reach the internet. I can ping servers and other clients but nothing outside the network. ipconfig reveals correct settings, but a release and renew almost always clears it up.
Any ideas?

Need more specific's... how are they connected to the internet? xDSL? T1? ... check all the obvious... if you have a cable or xDSL modem.. reboot it. Last weekends sqlSlammer worm slapped 5 of 13 major DNS servers.. which may may/not have affected your isp/service.

T1 connection.
Problem stretches back a few months so the slammer is probably not it.
What about setting the DHCP lease duration back. Right now its the default 8 days, do you think that could help?

Maybe something to look after is: Isn't the moment where the DHCP lease auto-renews the IP-settings of a box, the moment that it goes wrong?

In other words: maybe the auto-renew is a bit faulty on the boxes. (Could be a DHCP server problem)

Setting a new renew interval might solve the problem then.
