Client side DNS options

For reference, check this link for an example of the window I am referring to:
Under 'Advanced TCP/IP Settings', on the DNS tab, there a few settings that I'm not familiar with, and I haven't been able to find a thorough explanation as to what they are used for.

These include:
-Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
-Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix
-Append these DNS suffixes (in order)

What are they used for? Why would you choose to use them, or under what circumstances would you want to?

I'd greatly appreciate an example that illustrates the use of each.

linney - yes, that article is quite helpful. I still don't fully understand these DNS options, some more examples of their utility would be helpful.
