Hello all

I am having a problem with pushing clients from SMS 2003. I am using the Advanced Client. Some will push without a problem, but others will not. I believe I know why but would like to validate my thoughts. We have a group policy that disables the MSI on client computers. When I look at the Event Log on some computers that have not pushed the client I find this entry: Source is MsiInstaller, Message: Product: SMS Advanced Client -- Installation failed.

I am going to test by taking the group policy off for one machine that failed and try it again.

Does anyone know a way to push this client if the MSI is disabled?

I dont know of a way, but I guess the question is, is how are you going to push out packages/programs if you disable msi's?

If you dont want users to install things just dont give them admin rights on the local machines.

I know this isnt a helpful post but disabling msi's kind of defeats one of the main purposes of SMS.

Thanks

I've thought about what you pointed out as well. We wanted to be sure our users could not install anything. Very few users are admins on their boxes. We have set the policy for Always Install with elevated rights and I thought that would stop them being able to install but my boss didn't agree so we disabled the MSI entirely. I'm doing some experimenting now to see what happens if I enable MSI but keep it to install only with elevated privileges.

Thanks for your reply.
