We had SMS 3 (Beta) installed on a Win2K server in an NT4 domain, this had to be temporarily removed but was re-installed 24 hours later with exactly the same config. While the original installation was there it picked up a large number of network pc's and installed the client and tools on about 30% of them. Since it's been reinstalled it's picked up a bunch of switches, jet direct boxes and a handful of pc's, but none of the pc's that already have the client. The few pc's it has discovered haven't had the client installed depsite the push installation being configured. I've tried manually installing the client on several pc's but get the "SMS server could not be located" message (even when I type it in manually).

It'll be failry obvious we're flying a bit blind on this so I'd be grateful for any help.

Andy

ok andy - it seems like you already did this....sorry ;)

cheers,
chris

I hadn't, I just did it very quickly after you posted :)

Cheers

Andy

this sort of reminds me a bit of your other posting concerning troubles when using smsman.exe....seems to be the same error, can that be ?
btw: by typing "smsman.exe /?" you get the description of the switches (m is for manual installation)

hope this helps ya !

I'm begining to think that's the root of my problem, the CAP UNC. What share should this point to ?

Ignore my last message, the CAP unc is sorted. Now I just need to figure out how to rollout the remote tools and get it to recognise the pc's that already have components installed !!!!

I am not sure if I understand your question...
In my environment every SMS-Server (doesn't matter if primary or secondary) also functions as a CAP...and on drive E a dir called "CAP_xxx" is existing with subdirs in it. This dir is shared and the UNC-name is "\\ServerName\CAP_xxx".

Does this help you ?

The CAP problem is sorted now, but when I run the admin console I cannot see any workstations that I know already have the client installed.

Ok Andy, last posting is ignored - then please ignore my answer ;)

To install RemoteControl you just need to tell SMS to use it and SMS handles the installation on its own...Go to "Client Agents" and activate it.

The box is ticked but it still doesn't seem to be rolling out.

Andy, this takes time - the client updates all 23 hours and checks the CAP for new configuration, Hotfixes, ServicePacks,...

Let it be and take a look again on Monday !
Enjoy your Weekend...whereever you may be !

Thanks Chris, in true sad IT fashion I'll look forward to Monday ! Until then it's several beers down by the river here in sunny Bedford :)

I know that we are going offtopic now but: Bedford, UK ?

I'm off for the weekend now - Let me know what happened on Monday, will you ?
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris, I hope you had a good weekend.

Well, it's picked up the 1000 or so clients on the network but has so far only installed the client on 142 of them. It's listing the rest as "assigned" and doesn't seem to be resolving the names on most of them. I hoping this is because most of the pc's will have been off at the weekend and that the numbers will climb in the next couple of days, but it does appear to be very slow. Is this normal ?

Cheers

Andy
