Ive noticed an odd thing while trying to figure out why some of my clients are not installing. Some of my clients are showing up with the wrong system name.

ie
under my xp clients list compA and compB are listed. CompA says the client is not installed and compB says the client is installed. When i try to connect via Remote tools to compA it points to compB.

This seems to be only happening with XP clients.

Do i have to repair my sql DB? Or something else?

thanks,

Dave

Are these dhcp and how fast before the xp boxes get a new address and how long is the updated dhcp info going to SMS... I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.

they are on DHCP. All but one VLAN is on reserved DHCP by MAC address. Where do i look to how long SMS takes to recieve the new DHCP info?

Just to make sure i get you, you are saying that SMS is not recieving the correct/updated DHCP info from my DC's?

I could see how this is making some entries point to the wrong IP/machine, could this be changed to NetBios name instead of IP? Im not sure now this is affecting the clients with the wrong PC name. I am sure i am missing something though.

thanks for the info tbrennans, you've helped me in the past, someday i might be a semi-pro on SMS!

thanks,

Dave

Well its done through Network discovery BUT the more I think about this I'm so sure this would be the problem.

Everytime you log onto the network the delta changes should update the sms db so this shouldnt be an issue, but if you lost a client its not going to update anything to anywhere..

So.....

The other thing that would do this could be duplicate guids.

You make these xp machines from an image with the sms client installed?

Nope all normal installations using XP media.

Would it be time to delete and rediscover?

thanks,

Dave

How many sites are you using? are there any overlapping boundaries, either on the sites or roaming boundaries?
