Hi,

I'm pretty new to home networking and have recently set up a client server system consisting of 1 client and 1 server directly connected with a 10/100 ethernet line using the correct crossover cable. The Server uses Win2kServer and the client uses XP Pro.

Win2kServer is set up via the Configure Your Server wizard as a Domain Controller (domain is home.local) with Active Directory (which contains a small handful of OUs with users) DHCP and DNS. The server works fine, seemingly anyway.

I logged on to the client and successfully made it part of the domain (home). I then logged out from the cient based account and logged in as one of the users in the Active Directory.

My problem is that it the client takes literally somewhere around 45 minutes to 1 whole hour to log-in! It seems to take forever on the "Loading Personal Settings" and "Applying personal settings" bits and I'm lucky to ever see the taskbar, let alone one that responds to mouseclicks.

Any help as to why there is a major bottleneck or something will bevery much appreciated!

Thanks!

On your client make sure you have the IP of your domain controller as your primary DNS server.

Will check this, cheers. In work at the mo. Can't wait to get home to try it!

Check the DNS. AD require DNS. Did you install the DNS server on the DomainController?
If you have an internet connection on that server ( i think you have) then during install it is possible that your AD was trying to connect to the DNS from your ISP.
Of course that will not succeed, but this will just make the EventViewer of your server to be full of DNS errors (cannot register,, etc).
Your client has to be set to use the DNS used by your AD (should be the local one in your case).
Do not put in the DNS servers list from your client the DNS of your ISP (again, this in case that you have internet connection on that server).
