My company has MS Select Agreement and SMS is included in this. I am having trouble understanding what a CAL is? And whether this refers to the number of actual user nodes or the number of nodes that access the SMS Server. If someone could help clear this up it would be greatly appreciated. Do I have to buy a license for every machine that SMS installs the client on and queries?

CAL stands for Client Access License. In addition to having appropriate SMS server licensing, including the SQL license(s) to support your site structure, you must have 1 CAL for every work station or server that participates as a client.
