I just installed a DFE-530TX+ NIC, added client for ms networks, and restarted. The problem is that client for ms networks disappears every time I restart, so it won't work.

Any idea why it won't hang around?

If the NIC is not recognized, or is sharing resources, the client won't stay because there's no network.
It also won't stay if there's no protocall to bind to.
Get the NIC properly installed, add TCP/IP and you should get the client automatically. [sig]<p>Jim<br><a href=mailto:reboot@pcmech.com>reboot@pcmech.com</a><br><a href= & Sue's Free Files</a><br>Current moderator at Staff contributor/moderator at Windows 9x/ME instructor.<br>

I've tried reinstalling the drivers, and it tells me the card is working fine...but client for ms networks still won't stick around. I reinstalled windows 98se pretty recently, so I'm not really sure what it could be.

Go to Networking in control panel, remove ALL stuff.
Restart, and reinstall your NIC.
If it doesn't bind to a protocall, manually install TCP/IP and you should be able to get the client. [sig]<p>Jim<br><a href=mailto:reboot@pcmech.com>reboot@pcmech.com</a><br><a href= & Sue's Free Files</a><br>Current moderator at Staff contributor/moderator at Windows 9x/ME instructor.<br>

OK, now it will stay, but there's another problem. I can get to the logon screen (2line), but when I hit OK there, it just sits there. The textbox loses focus, and it doesn't do anything more. I've tried this with another network card, and it did the same thing. I've recently reinstalled windows98se (it did that before, but reinstalling seemed to fix it for a while). Does my computer have a thing against network cards?

Sounds like it's time for some new video drivers.
If anything goes wrong with video while doing something else, it's either a driver or a resource conflict.
Try assigning an IRQ for video in your BIOS setup.
Have you entered a user name in the logon (you must)?
Did you enter a password (you don't have to)? [sig]<p>Jim<br><a href=mailto:reboot@pcmech.com>reboot@pcmech.com</a><br><a href= & Sue's Free Files</a><br>Current moderator at Staff contributor/moderator at Windows 9x/ME instructor.<br>
