Client Access License question

I plan on building a server using Windows Server 2003. I see it advertised with Client Access Licenses (CAL's) starting at five (5) licenses and then going up.

Does this mean that after I buy a package with say, five licenses, I can build my server and then use this same software to load Windows XP on my five workstations? Or will I have to buy Windows XP for each of my workstations?

YUP, you have to buy five windows XP PRO licenses too.

This is microsoft, you get nothing for free and nothing's cheap.

The 5 CALs that come with the server allow you to have up to 5 people at a time connected to the server. As pmf71 said you also have to purchase Windows XP Pro for the workstations.

Okay, now I get it.

However, will Server 2003 recognize my Windows 2000 workstations? Or will my Windows XP Pro and XP Home workstations be the only workstations that will be able to access this server? Can you give me a brief idea as to how I would assign the CAL's to these workstations?

Basically, I want to build a file server. I only want this so that I will be able to familiarize myself with the server environment/administration tasks that are associated with a server operating system. Sure, it probably would be cheaper to just go out and buy a NAS device, but then I would be limited as to flexibility and functionality. Any suggestions?

Yes Server 2003 will recognize your Windows 2000 workstations. All versions of Windows from 95+ can talk to each other with out a problem. All the new stuff is backwards compatable. The CALs are assigned to the workstations automatically when they connect to the server.

Okay. Now I got it. I guess it all depends on how many systems I want to 'hook up' to this server that will determine how many CAL's I buy.

If I buy the package with 5 CAL's and I want more later, can I do this with this package? Or is it more economical to buy 10 CAL's in the first place? How much would each individual CAL cost?

Yes you can purchase additional CALs later.
