I have desktops on my domain that are taking upto an hour and a half to login to the server.

they hang on the apply settings screen for about 45 mins and then hang again once you put in your user details and attempt to login, once logged in every thing seems to be running fine.

This is not any specific client on the network but can be any one, seemingly at random.

These machines are not connecting over a VPN, they are local to the DC.

Any Ideas! I have users crawling all over me to et it sorted.

Try running network monitor on the server to see what is going on. You could have a bad nic clogging up your network.......

Microsoft used to have a tool to troubleshoot and optimize boot and login problems, BOOTVIS.EXE

Their website says that they no longer have it available, but I found it elsewhere on their website.

If you can't find it, let me know and I will email it to you.

Bootvis will not fix this problem and bootvis is longer available from MS.

This is likely a DNS problem. Are the clients configured to point to the DC for their DNS name resolution?

Yep, the clients are pointed toward the DC for resolution, however I am not completely sure of the DNS configuration, we brought in outside consultants to implement the system and they have made a right pigs er of it.

They are franticly trying to resolve the issue but have not devised a resolution as of yet, cheers for the help though guys.

Is the DC running DNS the only domain controller? If so, all they need to do is point it to itself for DNS and restart the netlogon service.

Make sure dynamic updates are enabled on the forward lookup zone and make sure the SRV records (_msdcs, _tcp, etc) are being registered.

what shows in the event log on the server and WS. are there roaming profiles or local.

whats changes have you made to active directory?

CCNA MCSE MCP NET+ A+ Security+

Active directory profiles are hosted on another server and replicated onto this particular one.
