How often should I 'clear errors'? Is there a best practice for backing up the error log, too? (S8710, R12, CM2.2)

Its going to depend on you. If you are just talking about using the "cl err" command you haven't fixed anything. If you are talking about looking up error codes and fixing the problems that are coming into alarms and errors, thats a whole different deal.

I have my guys stay on top of the errors everyday to make sure that nothing is creeping up on me that can be service affecting. The unplugged sets are also x-Ported and we try to keep the error logs clean even with the 6500+ stations we have behind our system. This lets me keep this thing clean and not have old sets out there eating up DID numbers, coverage paths used up for nothing, and free up ports without buying packs for new installs. Which also saves us money when it is time to do an audit for our maintenance agreements.

Yes, I keep my alarm log clear. I even x-port/delete phones that are unplugged or no longer is use as you do. When troubleshooting a current alarm, it can be frustrating to have to dig though a long error log.

So my question is should I be clearing the error log as soon as I have resolved all alarms? And is there a best practice for archiving the error log?

Most of the time when you resolve the alarm you have also cleared the errors. It may take a minute for it to happen so you could use the "cl err' command if you want to. As for keeping up with the error log and can get in and pull up the errors "disp err' and tab over to cleared errors like this.

Code:
display errors Page 1 of 1
                                  ERROR REPORT

The following options control which errors will be displayed.
         ERROR TYPES

            Error Type: Error List: cleared-errors

This will also let you pull up certain error types as you see above.

I would say never. There is no reason that I can think of to clear your error log. For me it is a history of what has gone wrong.
