when i try to clean a mailbox under mailbox resources, the option under tools...clean mailbox is not available.
it is however available under recipients which doesn't make sense.
sometimes i delete a mailbox under recipients but does it still show under private information store....mailbox resources.i cannot delete or clean these mailboxes and is it growing in size all the time

When deleting a mailbox from Exchange server it doesnt really delete it until you defrag your system.
Stop the information store and run:

ESEUTIL /D /ISPRIV

Make sure you have free diskspace. You must have at least the size of your information store free. If not use the following switch: /TF:\NEWPATH\TEMPDFRG.EDB

Would the same deleting of mailboxes in the Store take place during one of the auto defrag that Exchange runs?

David

Yes, it will.

An online defrag doesn't work the same as a offline defrag.
