Cleaning Autochanger devices

Hi,

Enviroment: NetWorker 5.2, NT4 and ATL1000.

Problem: After configuring Autochanger for cleaning, the following error message displayed and labelling failed.

"Cannot find cleaning slot for drive \\.\Tape0"

where \\.\Tape0 is the device name in the Autochanger.

The labelling works OK if I disable the "Auto clean" by choosing "No".
I followed the instruction in the Admin guide (p.256) and inserted the cleaning tape into Slot 1.
If you came across with this kind of problem, please let me know what I missed.

Hi there,

Sounds like you have Auto Clean enabled on both the hardware and within Legato. Turn it off in one or the other. You can't run the Auto Clean through the device and through Legato, they will conflict.

Thanks for your reply.
The AutoClean on the device(Autochanger) was originally Disabled.
I changed it to Enabled and disabled AutoClean on Legato,
but the result is the same.
In short, whether the AutoClean on the device is Enabled or Disabled, the same error message is displayed.

Sorry to hear that. Have you attempted to reset the element status and your hardware device? You could attempt to run and "inquire" from the cmdline, this will tell you what devices Legato has found. You should see the scsi card plus the device(s) attached to it, \\.\Tape0 in this case. You might wish to run "nsrjb -HE -v" this will reset the hardware and element status of your autochanger, in verbose mode. You will then want to inventory your autochanger. "nsrjb -I or nsrjb -Cv" So that all tapes are reconized in the proper slot. The inventory most likely won't help the \\.\Tape0 circumstance, but the hardware / element status reset should help.

I remember I went through a very similar situation. Legato, for some strange reason, actually took a valid tape, one that I happened to be restoring from at the time, locked it into the drive \\.\Tape3, and then dismounted it into slot 326, reserved for cleaning tape within Legato. To resolve the issue, I turned off Legato's auto cleaning, deleted all slots reserved for cleaning tapes, took a verbose inventory of the autochanager and the tape came back. This solved the "Cannot find cleaning slot for \\.\Tape# error". Perhaps there is a tape phsically stuck into the slot that you have reserved for the Auto Cleaning feature? I hope this is aid-full to you. I realize the frustration in trouble shooting this one.
