I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 98 so I ran an FDisk and reformatted the hard drive. Obviously that wipes everything off of the drive - but that was my intent. The problem is now I can't re-install Windows 98 from the CD-ROM when I try to boot up. It won't recognize the CD-ROM drive. I have a Windows 98 Startup disk, which will allow me to boot from the floppy. What do I need to do in order to install Windows 98 from the CD-ROM?

Thanks for your help.

See if you can set BIOS to boot from CD-ROM, otherwise, use the startup disk to boot with CD-ROM support.
What machine are you posting on?
If it's 98, then make a startupdisk on it.
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup disk tab. Cheers,
Jim

I tried booting from the Startup disk with CD-ROM support and it still wouldn't install from the CD. Where do I go next?

Lets get some info on the CDROM and the system. What type and speed CDROM? How old are the parts to the system? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

I've got a boot disk that has only failed once in years and that was early on with a proprietary CD-Rom. I used 95 boot disk but it doesn't really matter. The Himem & Emm386 you should have, MSCDEX date on mine was 8-24-96.

Autoexec.bat
@ECHO OFF
a:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

Config.sys
device=a:\himem.sys
device=a:\emm386.exe
DEVICE=a:\d011v200.sys /D:MSCD001

D011v200.sys can be found at the following.

Have fun. Please let us know if this was helpful. Best Regards, -md
