I ran across something strange yesterday while looking at a DTS package that I designed several months ago. Whenever I try to open the DTS package in Enterprise Manager on my local machine (connecting to the server), I get "DTS Designer Error: Class not registered". That may pop up once or twice, I click OK, and then the package opens up in designer. But it's not right, when I look at the properties for any of my icons in my package, they all have a Data Source of CR DB2. It doesn't matter if it's a text file, an Oracle server or another SQL Server, they all say CR DB2. And there are no other properties listed except for that, everything else is blank. Also, on my side menu pane where there should be several icons under "Connection" and "Task", I only have 2. There is an icon for "Microsoft Data Link" and one for "Other Connection" under "Connection" and that's it.

Now, the strange thing is, there's nothing wrong with the DTS package. It's running fine, and if I open up EM on the actual server, everything is correct. But if I use EM on my laptop to connect to the server and view the package, that's when everything looks crazy. I know it worked at one time, that's actually how I wrote the package, connecting to the server through my laptop's EM, so I don't understand why everything has gotten messed up. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

Thanks!

I have seen this happen when there are different versions of SQL running on different machines. V7 vs. V2000

Both of these are 2000 SP3a. That's an idea, though, I hadn't thought about that. I put some MS updates on my laptop last week and I haven't updated the server yet. I wonder if that could be it?

Thanks!

Was this problem ever resolved?

I am having the same problem. (Client machine accessing SQL Server 2000 SP3a server machine)

I understand this problem involves the 'dtspkg.dll' file. I tried unregistering/registering it, but no luck. Is there another solution short of re-installing the toolset???

Thanks,

I never did figure out how to fix it. I just always log on to the server and run it from there instead of using my laptop. Sorry I can't be of any more help....

For what it's worth, I figured it out how to fix it. I reinstalled SQL Server SP3a on my laptop. Apparently, some software update/install somewhere had overwritten or changed something Enterprise Manager needed to properly open a DTS package. I re-ran SP3a, and when it finished everything worked correctly. However, this probably means that there's some program/update on my laptop that no longer works because SQL Server changed the file back, but so far I haven't found it. :)
