I'm running 8720’s with CM4 at main site with an ESS at secondary location and an 8300 LSP at branch site.

Core Site - Region 1
ESS Site - Region 2
LSP Site - Region 3

The phones within region 3 (branch site) are currently registered to CLANS within region 1 but I want them to register to CLANS within region 2 and to only register to region 1 if region 2 is not reachable.

Can someone advise what I need to configure to obtain the required result?

Been a while since I did this but isn't this in the config files the phones download from the TFTP servers?

dj42.. I have IP phones.

From what I understand the phones register to CLAN’s in directly connected regions, regions 1 and 2 are both directly connected regions.

Currently I have the complete opposite to what I want, all the phones in region 3 are registered to CLAN’s in region 1 and only register to CLAN’s in region 2 in the event there is a complete loss of connection to all region 1 CLAN’s.

What clans do you have in the DHCP scope for each site? You should only have the clans you want the phones to use. The avaya server does use some sort of algorithm for load balancing and it's never been that great. I'm guessing that the ess site has less stations than the main and therefor will use less sockets registering to the local calns. I would do a list registered command and see what the gatekeeper is for the phones at each site. You can also do a list registered region and see all the stations in that region and what clan they are using. Compare all this data to the network map, ip addresses of the clans and the DHCP scope. You should be able to limit what clans the phones use this way.

The DHCP scope for the phones in region 3 only states one CLAN address for registration and that is of a CLAN in region 2.

If I list reg the phone in region 3 they show a gatekeeper address of a CLAN in region 1.

Can anyone tell me how they get a gatekeeper address for region 1 and how I force them into region 2?

I kind of ran into this problem before. When my main site goes down and the ESS takes over the IP phones start cycling through all my CLAN boards to find one that's available. From what I've been told there's no way to change the list of addresses they get. Your problem seems similar. Your phones get a list of the CLANs they can register to and like I said, from what I've been told, it can't be changed. I would really like to know more about the problem. Is there a specific reason why you want them to register the other CLAN?

Mainly to reduce the socket usage on the cards in region 1.
