Citrix Server Crash Analysis ????

Hi folks,
In one of the Citrix Server at our organization ( Windows NT Terminal Server 4 , SP 5 with Metaframe 1.8 ( SP 3 ), It crashes intermittently.

There doesn't seem to be any culprit drivers/process responsible.

The Memory.DMP file after analysis reads:

The nearest match to Exception address is the process:
"ntoskrnl.exe".

Event Log would give Event ID: 6008
specifying:

"The previous system shutdown at ..:.. PM on ../../.. was unexpected. "



Any information on how to further diagnose and solve the issue would be of immense help.
Also, Which potential glitch is the above data referring to ....

It would be very odd if there wasn't a list of drivers - I would start to suspect RAM.

MetaFrame SP3 works best with Terminal Server SP6 - try updating the machine and see if that stops the crashes.

How often do you reboot the server? CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Had a look on MS Knowledge base for the 1E error and I agree with CitrixEngineer, either reapply the service pack or upgrade to version 6.....

Thanks for your valuable response.

I have been actively thinking of applying Service Pack 6 , but didn't found any hint that it adds to the stability of MetaFrame.

On the contrary it creates problem with Citrix ICFA client and some extra patches needs to be installed.

If this is the general consensus I would go for it.

I was wondering if BIOS upgrade could be another option to try ....


Is there anything else we are missing here ?

The 1E error is being generated from within NT....??

Unless you can identify a recent hardware upgrade or driver (printer..???) install I would suggest first thing to try is the Service Pack....???!!!

I'm not sure what the ICFA client is (typo?), or what problems are supposed to be caused by SP6. There was an issue where the ICA browser became broken, but MetaFrame SP3 fixes that (and there's an additional M$ hotfix in case - can't remember the Q number).

Suspect a printer driver problem.

Was a printer added to your network recently, specifically immediately before you started to experience this problem?

We've found that in this environement one should not use any printer driver other than those found on the NT TSE installation cd.

Pay particular attention to any autocreated printers that may have been recently installed.

We found once, when we experienced the same problem that you describe, that a manager at a remote location had purchased and installed a printer on his local PC. Whenever he logged in to METAFRAME the printer was autocreated and our problems would ensue.

We have turned off autocreation of printers and instead use only network printers.

We have not seen this problem since then.

Printer driver causing problems? Surely not ;-)

Tip on printer drivers; NEVER install using the setup program on the manufaturer's media. These almost never work on Terminal Servers, and in many cases will actually cause the server to crash.

If you want to TEST a new driver, use the add printer wizard and choose the Have Disk option to find the relevant driver.

Always test printer drivers on a non-production server (ie a test server).

Hi Folks,
Well for now I have upgraded the SP level to 6 hoping that it helps.


Regarding Printer Drivers, that is a case I tried to look into initially. But all the printers we have are network printers and also the drivers are also standard drivers with no history of incompatibility with Citrix.

Regarding Mhurley Suggestion, any idea on how to go about turning off autocreation of printers ..
Kindof little confused here.
