Citrix - Moving Terminal Services from one server to another

Please excuse my limited knowledge of Citrix, but I need to move Terminal Services from one server to another. My concern is what changes I need to make on our Citrix Farm - if any? Our Citrix farm has 2 servers running presentation server 4.0, and one is listed as the License server. I'm not to sure where to procede from here.

dmbfanatpsu,
I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish here...might need a little more information.

So you have one TS server that has Citrix installed but you want to remove that server from the farm and add a new one?
Is that correct?

You can easily remove Citrix from one server and install it on another server. That won't be a difficult task at all. The one BIG thing you need to worry about is that you have to remember to install all the applications on the second server so it can be identical to the original Citrix server.

Imagine a user trying to launch Word on the new server and the server doesn't have the application!(no fun).

Here is a simple quick list:
On the Citrix server that you are removing:
1. Make sure its not hosting a one-off application. This means, check to see that there isn't a published application that this server is the only Citrix server publishing it out. If this server is the only server publishing out MS Word and you remove Citrix from it.....the published application will be removed.
2. Once you've done that...simply go to the Add/Remove programs and uninstall Citrix. Once it reboots..the server will be out of the Citrix farm. You can check this by going to the CMC or Access Suite and check the Servers container.

On the Citrix server you want to add:
1. Build the server and put the server into Application Mode for Terminal Services. You can do that by going to Add/Remove and go to components. There should be a Terminal Service option there. This will put it into multi-user mode.
2. Install Citrix on it and follow the wizards to add it to your existing Citrix farm.
3. Install all of the applications needed on the Citrix server.
4. Add the server to your load-evaluators and then add the server to any published application that it was originally in.

Hope that helps.

Sorry....let me clarify a little. We have one server that has terminal services running on it has nothing to do with the two citrix servers. I just want to move terminal services from the server to one of our domain controllers because we are getting ready to retire the server. I just don't know how our two citrix servers are tied into that terminal services server?
I have another issue as well, on the one citrix server, when I try to open the License management console I get an error: HTTP Status 404 - /lmc/index.jsp

dmbfanatpsu,
So it sounds like you are talking about the actual Terminal Services Licensing service.....?

If you aren't...and you are simply saying that it just has Terminal Services enabled (in application mode) and multiple users are connecting to it to access an application.......then it should not have any kind of impact to your Citrix farm.
As a matter of fact, you can go into your Citrix farm (CMC) and look at the servers folder and it should not even be listed in that section. The only way it would impact your Citrix farm is that if it had Citrix installed on it.

If you are talking about your Terminal Services License server...then its a little bit more complicated. You have to make sure you move your TSCal licenses over to it, active it and make sure it has all of your TSCAL's. THEN...you have to make sure you Citrix servers are pointing to this new TS License server so they can still provide TSCAL's to your Citrix sessions.

Hope that helps.

O.K. That's the question.....How\Where do I point my Citrix servers to the new TS License server?

dmbfanatpsu,
Here is how you can set the preferred TS License Server in the Citrix server:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate, and then click, the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type LicenseServers to name the new key.

4. Locate, and then click, the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters\LicenseServers

5. On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type ServerName where ServerName is the NetBIOS name of the license server that you want to use, and then press ENTER.

The new key name can be any of the following designations that represent the license server:

• The NetBIOS name of the server

• The fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server

• The IP address of the server

6. Restart your computer

That will point your Citrix server to the new TS License Server. Also...make sure your mode is Per Device and not Per User on both your Citrix server and the TS License Server.

Hope that helps.

THANK YOU! I'll give it a shot. I'm surprised that citrix doesn't have anything built into that allows you to select what TS server you want to use without having to hack the registry.
