When I try to connect to the cisco vpn client, I get this error:

secure vpn: connection terminated locally by the client
reason:422 failed to enable virtual adapter

I googled this error, and several sites suggested uninstalling/reinstalling cisco vpn client. That didn’t help.
Btw, I see the Cisco VPN Adapter under my network connections.

Couple other sites suggest disabling internet connection sharing on vista. This is a windows xp machine with sp3. In my LAN properties, the “internet connection sharing” checkbox is unchecked.

There are couple firewalls, which I disabled. Still no luck.

I had a pc problem couple weeks ago, and I had to reinstall everything from scratch. I didn't receive this error before.
How can I resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

What firewalls are you using? Apart from the Windows Firewall, disable third party ones is not always successful in preventing any settings that are already in place. You may need to configure them to allow the connection, or even uninstall them to check for a problem caused by them.

Some other security programs have hidden firewalling components too.

Will your VPN Client work from "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Have you missed out on any Network Card updated drivers when you reinstalled?

Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

The motherboard cd installed one firewall. I also use my McAfee firewall. Didn't try to reboot windows in safe mode. I will try that.
I used the original cds (motherboard, graphic cards, etc etc) to reinstall the drivers.

You might try this--it's what we do at the company where I work.

In Network Connections, right-click your Cisco Systems VPN Adapter which should be disabled and enable it.

Right-click your Cisco Systems VPN Adapter again, this time selecting "Diagnose". It will tell you the network adapter does not have a valid IP configuration.

Select "Reset the network adapter ........ ", this will take a while (around 60 seconds on my laptop)

Windows will again prompt you saying the IP configuration is still invalid, ignore this and just press Cancel.

Go back to the Network Connections, right-click your VPN Virtual Adapter and Disable

Now open Cisco VPN, and you should be able to connect without any issues.

Hi, I removed the firewall came with the motherboard. Run netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt to rebuild the TCP/IP stack. That didn't help either.

This is a windows xp machine. So, I don't have the "diagnose" option when i right click on the adapter. I believe this solution is for windows vista machines.

thanks

This probably wont help either but you can try -

Netsh Winsock Reset

After removing this firewall did you try your first solution of then "uninstalling/reinstalling cisco vpn client"?

15 Tips for Troubleshooting VPN Connections

"If you have an active Winsock Proxy client, you cannot create a VPN connection. A Winsock Proxy client immediately redirects data to a configured proxy server before the data can be processed in the fashion required by a VPN connection. To establish a VPN connection, you should disable the Winsock Proxy client".

Use Virtual Private Networks for Secure Internet Data Transfer
