hi,
I just have a few small questions. I am a first year CCNA students and I have I work for a Computer company doing networking. I have my first cisco networking job todo and I need a little help.
Well more like questions.

Does the ISP provide their own router? or do we have to configure our routers for the internet??

Should we use frame-relay or HDLC...or does t1 even use frame-relay?

Other than
IP address 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
Encapsulation hdlc
description
noshutdown

what else should we have under the interfaces??

does t1 go to one router to antoher router or can we go router, router, to router?

Thanks
nathan

Usually the ISP will provide a router, and it will be setup to work.
They will probably want more money to setup port forwards, and get NAT working or whatever you want to do.
They basically set up the bare minimum to where they can say the T line is up so they can start billing you.

They will pick whether to use HDLC or whatever else, because they know how the router at the other end of the line is setup... You probably don't.

Nope not at all -they havnt even came out yet. We have to goto oklahoma to program the other router to be able to communicate to this one back here in Indiana.

Like I said, i'm fairly new to the cisco routers, i've taken the CCNA course but have differed the exam for a year in orderto learn more, and cisco didn't cover ANY of these commands or anythign (well....some...)

for the T1 going between one router and tot he other that I setup last night I put the following

Router A.
Overton_Main# interface Serial 1
Overton_Main(config-if)# ip address 192.168.0.1 (subnetmask)
Overton_Main(config-if)# encapsulation HDLC
Overton_Main(config-if)# no shutdown

Overton_Main# interface Serial 1
Overton_Main(config-if)# ip address 192.168.0.2 (subnetmask)
Overton_Main(config-if)# encapsulation HDLC
Overton_Main(config-if)# no shutdown

Should we put anything else in there??? it works it pings directly accross....is anything else recommended?

Hi,
Your config will work fine (to ping across link- you will need to conf other interfaces and routes as well for 2 proper communications) if this is leased line. If it is something other then some extra config (or even a new interface) will be needed. Here I buy my own routers and config them on circuits directly, most poeple though order circuit and termination devices (routers) each side and the service provider will look after them. This is only cost effective if your config never changes and usually the service provider will not share joint access with you and them for admin of routers.

Hi there -

Your best bet and most cost effective would be to get your leased line from the provider and then manage your own routers. Basically, once communication is setup between them there is nothing to do, so you'd be wasting money month after month to pay the provider to "manage" and stagnant link. Now if this was your internet connection, I would definitely have the provider manage the link and they would provide and install a router on the customer premise and connect it to the smartjack and ensure that they were getting the correct error free communication back to their switch.

With a ppp (point to point) link such as this leased line your basic config looks fine. The only other things that you would need would be either your static route statements or a routing protocol (RIP, EIGRP, IGRP) so that the network routes are created.

Hope this helps.
