Im studying for my CCNA and I bought a cisco 2500 router. When i received the router it had a secret password when you type "enable". I followed the instructions to reset the password and rebooted the router using the instructions in this article:
After I typed "rebuild" the router restarted and I started getting "C" symbols. I have rebooted the router and pressed enter, but i still receive these ascii "C" symbols.

I just plugged the cable into the AUX port and press enter and i get the "Router>" prompt but the "enable" command outputs there is no password. If i switch the cable back into the console port there is no response. What do I do next?

Rebuild? You mean reload perhaps? Plug back into the console port and hit return a few times - you should get a prompt unless your cable or port is bad. Did you finish the password recovery procedure? Be sure to set the config register back to 0x2102 or you will have difficulties later on.

im guessing your config register is wrong and your console baud rate is different then what your connecting at...

easiest way is to try different baud rates and connect to the console port...

115200 seems to be a common baud rate that ive had to recover from..

Helpdeskdan, I know the cable is working because the cord works in another cisco router's console port. I followed the instructions in the article that i stated and I didnt have any problems until I typed "reload"

The baud rate that I used before this problem is 9600, but now when i use that baud rate and press enter on the boot of the router nothing happens.

Plshlpme, as you stated, I changed the baud rate to different rates with the cord plugged into the console port and listed the responses below. I rebooted the router several times with each rate.

Baud 300 - no output when i press enter; hyper terminal freezes.

Baud 1200 - Serial0: attempting to restart
HD(0): Reset from 0x107E808
Serial1: attempting to restart
HD(1): Reset from 0x107E808
Serial0: attempting to restart
HD(0): Reset from 0x107E808
Serial1: attempting to restart
HD(1): Reset from 0x107E808
Serial0: attempting to restart
...and it repeats

Baud 2400 - I receive "~~ff~x~~~" when i press enter
Baud 9600 - No ouput when i press enter
Baud 19200 - No ouput when i press enter
Baud 38400 - No ouput when i press enter
Baud 115200 - No ouput when i press enter

If i plug the cord into the AUX port on baud rate 9600, I receive the router> prompt but if i type a command it outputs "No password set." Are there any commands that I can run in the AUX port?

I tried all the baud rates, but that didnt work. Are there any commands that i can type in the AUX port to fix the problem with the router?

Dude

in the process of changeing the register for password recovery 0x2 what ever you may have made a mistake.

Often the extra or wromng integer causes the baud rate to be something other then the default. Try them all!

keep trying the baud rates.
keep trying the baud rates.
keep trying the baud rates.

If your useing hyperterm try downloading another terminal software. Securecrt or PUTTY

Here are some possible guesses to a work around.

See if you cant find a program that you can download and upload the config using snmp and fix what is wrong. Solarwinds has a program that can do this and hope that the snmp community is still "private"

Lastly buy new flash and shove it in and move on and read your ccna book again before you do this again.

OH all if mentioning the softwares is against the rules sorry first posting!

FINALLY, I was able to access the router by using the 1200 Baud rate. It still stated "HD(1): Reset from 0x107E808
", but I just waited for a couple of minutes and it gave me a prompt to configure the device.

I wonder why I was able to access the router at a faster speed but now i can only access it at 1200. Originally, I was working at baud rate 9600, but i wasnt able to access the configurations because a password was enable on this new router. I followed the directions to reset the password in the link above and that started this problem.

Is there any way to increase the speed of the router, as I had it, before i reset the password?

Dang, I have GOT to read these cisco pages better. 1200 IS a valid baud rate, and I would have seen it if I had just scrolled up a little before posting.

To answer your question, yes, there is. You probably typed in 0x1202. The register you WANTED for password recovery was 0x2142. Change that config register and set your terminal server back to 9600. In rommon, that is o/r 0x2142, in ios it is config-register 0x2102. Then, you can continue with you password recovery.

do a "sh ver" the last line will say:

configuration register is 0xYYYY

what you want it to say is 0x2102, but it will say something different since your baud rate is 1200.

to change it back you need to go to configuration mode and simply type

config-register 0x2102

that will return the router to 9600 baud rate and it will load the ios from flash and the configuration from nvram.

if you need to do a password recovery then you will need the config register to be
0x2142.

Dan osted a good link above to show you what the differnt settings mean and how they affect the way the router boots and operates.
