cisco router 2514 on comcast cable 2

So im really confused now. I recently got a cisco 2514 router. It has 2 db15 aux ports, 2 serial ports, 1 rj-45 console port, and last but not least 1 rj-45 aux port. I have comcast highspeed cable Internet. It provides the rj-45 connection, but im not sure what port on the router I will want to connect it to. I took the cisco courses and used the 2600 series router so go figure I decide to go with something less. And in the router config the 2 aux ports are the eth0 and eth1 if I remember correctly thanks in advance for any help.

What is that supposed to mean brianna. Unfortanitly this equipment is going into a church and so people dont have a lot of money so im trying to make do with what equipment I have but its proving a challenge to get this router working with the internet. Do you have any suggestions on a better router to use for comcast internet. I want it to have some of the same features that the 2514 does, remote login so i can be at home login to the network and administer computers, and if possible a web interface. Our current router one off the shelf at staples is giving ip conflict accross the network and so I have to tell the computer which ip to have they cant be dynamic.

you would be better off going with some of the newer 870x series. the 2514 will never be able to support vpns and i doubt it will do much along the lines of CBAC or other security features that you may wish to use.

honestly it would probably be better for you to just install the linksys at the church at this point.

Oooo, Mikey---I thought this was for practice. If it is for a church, I would definitely stick with the LinkSys for now and sell the 2514 on Ebay. Heck, I'd even buy it off you! Can't ever have too many routers at home...lol
If you do want a Cisco, then I would go for something that is VPN capable. Plshlpme...don't you have an older 1760 you're using? What would you think of that? I think those are not that bad on Ebay, are they?
Mikey, I am serious about buying that 2514, if you want. Let me know...

A Linksys or Netgear router that supports VPN wouldn't be a bad idea. If you want something Cisco I would recommend investing in a Cisco ASA 5505. It is secure out of the box, will support VPNs for remote access and is built for the environment that you intend.

I meant no disrespect from my statement, other than the 2500's have been End of Lifed 5 years or so ago and lack key features. You need a firewall capable device, not merely a router.

An ASA 5505 with a 50 user license is 600 dollars. There is a church in a neighboring community that had 16 grand stolen out of their bank account after their network was compromised and passwords were stolen to their online bank accounts. Churches are a business none the less and have to secure there resources in the same manner.

ya im still using the 1760 as my router and it does the job no problem.. it can handle vpns as well if required.
i have two 5mb dsl lines going into it, just needed to add a wic-1enet for the dsl lines.. im sure they can be found cheap cheap cheap these days (routers and wics)

OK, thanks guys for all the help. Here is what we have at the church set up right now. and I would like to upgrade things to make it a little more secure and possible to add equipment later as we plan to add many features.

1. Comcast cable line coming in with a static ip address
2. smc business gateway with 4 port switch
3. Thomason digital voice modem
4. Dell 1184 wireless b router connected to smc gateway
5. Hp Procurve 224m hub connected to dell wireless router.
6. All office rj-45 jacks connected to patch panel
7. Patch cables connecting patch panel to procurve switch.

So as you can see we are using extreamly old equipment, the router has no vpn capability let alone a firewall. And the hub doesn't have any management capability. We are adding on a web server, email server, storage server, and hopefully make the web server an ftp type where someone can work on a calendar and then upload it from their home and who la the new calendar is up and running. But with the current equipment I really don't see that as a feasible option. Also the vpn issue I would like some of the tech people to be able to login to the systems from anywhere they have an Internet connection, be able to connect to the computer remotely and give help when needed.

I want to upgrade the system so that we can be secure and not have any problems, but also im not exactly sure one what equipment is the best to use. I did take the cisco netacad course in high school, but we learned more of the wiring and standards more than the what equipment is used for what, along with programming that equipment to work for your needs. SO any help on what router would be the best option allowing all these needs but without spending to much.

I had just got it off ebay a week ago and because it was cisco I knew it would work, the unfortanit thing was that it doesn't work for what I want it to do. But one question about that is could I use it at my home which also has comcast with a dynamic ip to login to the church with a cisco.
