I am a newbie to Cisco so this is probably an easy question for experts. I have a cable modem that works fine with my computer but once I added the Pix 501 firewall between my computer and the cable modem I can no longer access the internet. I get an internal IP address of 192.168.1.2 no problem and can browse other computers on the network with ease but the Internet does not work. I can access the management console using 192.168.1.1 and just went through the basic setup wizard keeping all default settings the same. Is there a default rule that blocks internet access? Is there a way I can find out if my Pix 501 is getting DNS and IP address from the cable modem? Why can't I access the internet? I have a Windows XP Home computer that I am trying to get this to work on.

Hi,

Did you connect the PIX to the cable modem with a crossover cable as recommended ? If so, try changing it to a straight through cable. Also, try powering down the cable modem and pix. Power up the modem, wait about 2 mins or so and then power up the pix. Use your PDM to browse into the pix and you should see that it has obtained an IP address from the cable modem.

Regards Colin.

I connected the PIX to the cable modem with the orange cable that came with it on port '0'. Is the orange cable a cross over cable?

I did power down the cable modem and waited for a while and then turned it back on and then plugged in my the PIX to the cable modem.

Where can I see the IP address in the PDM (don't have it in front of me)?

Out of the box is there any configuration for inbound/outbound traffic to access the internet?

thanks a lot!

Hi,

Yes, the orange cable is a crossover.
As soon as PDM launches, you are presented with the Home page. On the right hand side you will see the Interface Status telling you the interface IP's (inside/outside). Out of the box, the pix allows everything out.
My guess is that you need to use the yellow (straight through) cable that came with the pix. What ISP do you use ?

Regards Colin.

Powering down the modem and firewall for and for about 20 minutes then powering them up in synchronize fixed my problem, I guess I didn't wait long enough for the DNS to free up the first time I tried it. Thanks.
