Anybody can give a quick setup on VPN access for remote users via internet?
I have a 2610 rtr(ios ver.12.0), which client software is suitable and does authentication take place on the rtr?
In other words, this VPN setup will be a dedicated rtr for
this scenario, we are looking for a cheaper alternative via the CISCO way.
It provides access for at most 20 users.

Thanks,

Hi, I recently configured a VPN using a Cisco 2621 router and Cisco's VPN client software. I used a pre-shared key to handle authentication and yes, the router handles that. I had some trouble with the IOS software so the Cisco tech upgraded me to IOS version 12.1 and everything works great. The client software is a much more economical method of establishing a VPN rather than using multiple routers at remote sites. Be careful if you're using Windows 2000 clients. The software I got from Cisco wasn't compatible with Windows 2000 so I contacted the software engineer company directly. They are called IRE ( Just purchase the lastest version of their SafeNet software. It's fully compatible with Cisco routers and supports DES or 3DES encryption. You'll have to make sure that your IOS software supports that encryption also. This of course means you'll need more RAM in your router to run the IOS software.

If you have any more questions just ask and I'll try to help you out.

Thanks for the reply, please brief me on the steps when you have the chance or if anyone else has had the opp to fiddle with this feature.

Till then I will research the cisco site.

Thanks Guys,

Mig

I am a newbie(just completed CCNA)so excuse the novice
behavior.

Hey migueljr3 just use configmaker easier to setup! I myself prefer the CLI

I don't think Cisco's Config Maker has support for configuring VPN's using their client software. The version I have doesn't. You just have to find documentation and use that for assistance.

Migueljr3, have you got the client software and the IOS upgrade yet?

I am going to stick with the CLI, working on getting the
client software as I am jotting this down..
Thanks for the quick reply guys!

Thanks for having patience with me!

If you buy it from Cisco they only have version 1.0 but visit IRE's website as I posted above and get their latest version of SafeNet or call and ask them about it if you want. Cisco's version does not work with Windows 2000. Just a heads up.
