Hi everyone,
I have a 2501 router that iam trying to upgrade the IOS to atleast 11.3. I went to cisco.com to purchase one but you need expensive business accounts for that. Can anyone please point me in the right direction and the least expensive way of optaining the image file? Thanks in advance for any help.

Cisco allows upgrades from my understanding if you are a SmartNet customer. SmartNet is Cisco's maintenance/warranty service. We have many switches and routers, and WAN switches that we cover every year. For example, you might pay $500/year to cover a router and with that you get replacement service (depot, onsite, Next Business Day replacement or 24x7) and upgrade options. This is the only way I know to do this other than purchasing the new IOS from Cisco or getting a special allowance for say a major security problem.

Expensive? all a matter of perspective.. Consider this, one router(2514) out of several on contract.. it's 270$ US a year.. this gives me access to the IOS code and callin to TAC. It has paid for itself many times over in the last few years. Consider it a retainer to have a Cisco Consultant on tap all year.

Heres the story, I got a really good deal on the router at an auction. I bought it for my own personal use to study from. Everything works fine except for there is no IOS image file in flash.

Router<boot>

So what my router is doing is booting from ROM and using a subset of the IOS with minimal configuration options. Iam just in search of an image file that i could use for my router to get some hands on experience.

Get a Cisco IOS Feature Pack. They are everywhere on ebay. $20 or so.
