I'm not sure if this forum is the correct one for my question, but here goes...
I am wondering if the Cisco ATAs are compatible with modem functions, i.e. data transfer between a PC connected to a PBX. I recently tried to perform remote programming through a laptop connected to a Cisco ATA to a PBX and could never get the connection to stay live. I used the same laptop on a trditional POTS line and it worked just fine. Any one have any ideas on a config or ideas for this problem?

dlwebb,

you should probably try posting this in the Cisco: Call Manager section - since ATAs are normally used there. As far as your question, I used to work on the Cisco TAC and the official word on some of the original ATAs were 'no fax transmission over 9600.' Later versions had higher quality oscillators and would handle fax transmissions up to 14.4.

Modems are not supported on the ATA-186/188 - though I have seen them work, occasionally(for time sheet readers and stuff like that). If you get it to work, great. If not - well, it's not supposed to work anyway. Sorry.

I would suggest trying to disable v.34 and above on your modem, make sure you're using g711 for your audio codec, and try to disable VAD in the ATA. If you go to you should be able to modify the 'audiomode' field to 0x00120012 - eash 4 hex digits configures one of the ports, so if you only wanted to modify port 1's characteristics, just set audiomode to 0x0012XXXX (leave the last 4 to whatever you had it at).

Hope that helps.
