My CISCO 877 Router is just out of warranty and I have forgotten my password to login with the SDM software. CISCO will not help me as it is out of warranty. I have tried the "press the reset button within 5 seconds of power on" and this does nothing. The default username/password cisco/cisco does not work.
Can anyone assist further? I dont know where to turn except to purchase another unit. Only reason we need this to work is we are changing ISP. The unit has been great and it has worked well - hence I havent had to login and the previous tech never recorded passwords.

dmarrows,

Just do a password recovery from the console -

Reset the Router
To reset the router, follow these steps:

-----------------------------------------------

Step 1 If break is enabled, go to Step 2. If break is disabled, turn the router off (O), wait 5 seconds, and turn it on (|) again. Within 60 seconds, press the Break key. The terminal displays the ROM monitor prompt. Go to Step 3.

-----------------------------------------------

Note Some terminal keyboards have a key labeled Break. If your keyboard does not have a Break key, see the documentation that came with the terminal for instructions on how to send a break.

------------------------------------------------

Step 2 Press break. The terminal displays the following prompt:

rommon 2>
Step 3 Enter confreg 0x2142 to reset the configuration register:

rommon 2> confreg 0x2142
Step 4 Initialize the router by entering the reset command:

rommon 2> reset
The router cycles its power, and the configuration register is set to 0x2142. The router uses the boot ROM system image, indicated by the system configuration dialog:

--- System Configuration Dialog ---
Step 5 Enter no in response to the prompts until the following message is displayed:

Press RETURN to get started!
Step 6 Press Return. The following prompt appears:

Router>
Step 7 Enter the enable command to enter enable mode. Configuration changes can be made only in enable mode:

Router> enable
The prompt changes to the privileged EXEC prompt:

Router#
Step 8 Enter the show startup-config command to display an enable password in the configuration file:

Router# show startup-config

Hope this helps!!

Thanks CiscoGuy33,

I dont have a console. Can I use HyperTerminal to access the console? If so, how do I configure this?

Do I follow the same process as you have outlined?

Cheers.

Is there a telnet client for VISTA that I can use? Will this let me at a console to reset the unit?

dmarrows,

Vista does not do Hyperterminal, but if you do a search at Google, you can find some programs that will work with Vista, just search hyperterminal for Vista.

And yes it works the same as Hyperterminal in XP or 98.

The console port is on the router and you will need to have a console cable, that should have come with the router, if not you can get one on Ebay or just about anywhere on the Internet that deals with network equipment.

Here is information for Applying Correct Terminal Emulator Settings for Console Connections -

You really just need to start using Google !!!

Here are a few guides at Cisco for the 870 routers that might get you started.

Hope this helps!

Ok so found Telnet is not installed with VISTA as standard. Installed VISTA Telnet.

Connected to Router at 10.10.10.1 via Telnet

Will reboot modem and see how I get on.

Thanks CiscoGuy33.

I do have a RJ45 to Serial cable here somewhere. I am going around in circles googling solutions ... but I'll try the links that you posted.

Most of the documentation that I can find from cisco assumes that the default username and password of cisco/cisco is in place.

Will let you know how I get on.

Ta.

CiscoGuy is right on the money, the blue RJ45 / Serial cable is the one you need for this procedure. You also can't use the telnet client, you need a terminal emulator client, I use Putty and set it to COMx, 9600 and do password resets from there.

Connect the cable, run up putty and connect to com1 (or whatever you are plugged into) and then press enter a few times, you should see the login screen. Now follow CiscoGuys instructions.

If by chance you actually see a prompt that looks like Router# then you can actually reset the password right there and then.....
