Maybe silly (I know the if it ain't broke don't fix it rule), but my 837 is on an older IOS. She also only (currently) has 12MB Flash.

Question 1; what are the pitfalls to watch if I go from c837-k9o3y6-mz.123-2.XE4.bin to c837-k9o3sy6-mz.124-12.bin (The latest one I can find as my cisco acct is not of sufficient level to get direct).

Question2; I've found DRAM and FLASH on ebay for this router ($20) to take it from 64/12 to 80/24. If I get this I could go with the most recent IOS (requires 16MB Flash) (assuming I can find the image somewhere). Am I spending money for nothing here? (I am thinking later in the year to go and get a 877 with Wireless inbuilt)

Thanks for tolerating a few newbie questions guys

Rachel

If you are going for wireless, then why bother?

Also, are you running into a bug, or is there any particular functionality you are looking for that your present IOS does not have?

Well I do have a WAP at the moment (a nice Linksys). The planned replacement (877w) won't happen until later this year. Currently I am having some stability issues with my line (I am getting thousands of DSL Defect LOM messages (9500 between 1900 and 0430 currently).

I've googled the heck out of this and several times encounter the 'check you are up to date' default reply. It got me thinking that perhaps my August'07 firmware could do with a spruce up and maybe it will help.

I am a firm believer in not fixing stuff that ain't broke - but in my case it could be broken; so why not.

It's a pain also right now as I suspect a licence for the IOS will cost me an arm and a leg (and the latest I've found so far from 'other' sources is 12.4-12. Id like to put the last one on there (12-24c).

I will also keep the 837 after the upgrade as I plan to do the CCNA next year and its nice to have a box to play with.

1)No pitfalls

2)Not a waste---go for it.

3)42

Cheers - All went well. I've ordered the Ram to go to a later release if I feel like playing some more.

now running Version 12.4(12) and thus far so good - I've spent some time on a new config file (to remove the backup dialler) so I'll set about testing it tomorrow perhaps - any comments always welcomed....
