Hi. My router recently will not boot from the flash. I keep getting the rommon prompt. When it tries to boot I get:

I can upgrade the rommon just fine, and i have tried different versions of rommon with no difference.

I have used both SolarWidnows TFTP and tftp32.exe to flash, still no difference.

Any suggestions on something to try? Shouldn't I beable to load a new IOS via rommon? I have also tried xmodem (which took 3 hours) with the same results.

Thank you in advance.

Are you sure it is an 831 you have? The main reason for that message is that its for the wrong device.

yes, as far as I know. It says 831 on the back of it, the bottom says model 800a series. I have used other images on it.

even if i remove the flash (intel notched chip) I still get

when booting:

do these have integrated flash memory that cannot be removed?

Not that I am aware of. Is that a valid IOS that you downloaded off the cisco site, or one you obtained otherwise?

cisco.com, all of them. I have tried almost everyone they list for 831. This same image worked last week too. One day I can home and it was rebooting itself and I could not replace the IOS.

When you do a tftpdnld, it erases the flash (I think). I could be thinking of replacing the IOS while the router is booted...at any rate, if this same IOS worked last week, then I would say that the flash went south on ya.

Burt

del does not work. I flashed the ROM with c831-k9o3y6-mz.124-16.bin last week, then it said it did not have enopugh memory to run all of the ffeatures. Then it started rebooting itself. It was in a loop for about 8 hours when I was at work, then when I got home it was stuck in rommon.

I wonder why it thinks that these IOS' i have tried are for a different platform. Even when I boot without the flash in it, it says the same thing. Is there supposed to be a flash: and a flash:1 ? If I take out the intel notched chip (i believe is the flash) and do a dir flash: it still says

c831-k9o3y6-mz.124-16.bin

why is that?

how can i check to be sure that the router is even recognizing the flash? dir flash: ? dev?

dev reveals:

Devices in device table:
id name
flash: flash

dir flash reveals:
rommon 2 > dir flash:
File size Checksum File name
7533388 bytes (0x72f34c) 0xa403 c831-k9o3y6-mz.124-16.bin

and that is with or without the flash chip in. It is almost like the image is written on the rommon program, or the device is not recognizing the flash card at all and when I am trying to flash, it thinks I am trying to put an IOS image in the rommon's space.

I am not sure if that model has an onboard flash or not---what size is it? Does rommon report the same after you take out the flash card and then power it on? For that image, you need 64MB DRAM and 12 MB flash, minimum.

Burt

Yes...you posted this before...

"ain memory size: 48 MB.
Available main memory starts at 0x1b000, size 49044KB"

Sorry, but you need 64MB to run that code. Even if the flash is big enough, your DRAM is not---I have loaded IOS's before where I had plenty of room on the flash, but DRAM was too low to run it---you'll get unpredictable results. I'm pretty sure you can find DRAM on Ebay pretty cheap for that, and a flash module. Let me know if this is the route you plan on going...also, do you have a previous IOS that did work, besides this one? If so, load it and when the router boots, do a "sh ver".

Burt

i think i know what is going on. When I do a dir flash: it shows the flash info for the integrated 8MB flash. When I do a dev, it should show a Flash: and a Flash:1, but it doesn't. So i think my flasg chip is bad and somehow the ios is stuck in the 8MB on board flash. If anyone had a 800 series router, can they go in to rommon mode and do a dev, then meminfo, then dir flash: and dir flash:1 and report back. If I can compare it to someone that has a working one, then I will know what is going on. Also, my 831 is limited to 48MB of ram. It is one of the first release 831, not the K9-64's

I can---I still have my 837, trying to sell it. I can unbox it either tonight or tomorrow and let you know.
