Hi, I got a cisco 800 router and I used it with dsl. Everything works great. Now I would like to change it to cable internet. The SDM settup shows:
CABLE MODEM:
1. HOST NAME:
2. DOMAIN NAME:
I got the user name/password from the cable internet and I am not sure where to add these. Should the host name be the user name and domain name be the password?
Thanks, Dave

The username and password for SDM? You set them in the router...

router>en
router#conf t
router(config)#username dave priv 15 secret (password)

or, if it does not have the crypto feature set and you get an error at "secret", then...

router(config)#username dave priv 15 pass (password)
router(config)#ip http server

or if you want to use ssl, and if the router has the crypto feature set (k9 in the IOS), then...

router(config)#ip http secure-server
router(config)#ip http authen loc

Unfortunately, Firefox does not necessarily jive with it all the time, but I myself have never had a problem...

no no, not the pass of the sdm, I would like to add the comcast internet user name and password in the sdm for the cisco. The cisco sdm doesn't show the user name and password option just host name and domain name. Thanks

I think SDM does allow the setup of the DSL logonID and password. You will need to go into the interface configuration option for the 8XX router. Select the DSL interface and review the PPPoE options. Check with Comcast to see if you need to logon using CHAP or PAP. You can select the method of authentication and enter your logonID and password. These will be added to the configuration for future use. When you're finished with the set-up, make sure you save the configuration.

Oops, forgot to ask....

What's the router model, what version of IOS and what version of SDM?

Oh...sorry.

You could just make it easy on yourself and do the CLI...

ok the router is soho 91 with 12.2(8)YN and SDM v.3.3.0
In the quick setup I got the following options:
CABLE MODEM:
1.HOST NAME:
2.DOMAIN NAME:

DSL MODEM
1.USER NAME:
2.PASSWORD:

So using CABLE internet can I use my comcast id/pass and add it to DSL MODEM option in order to setup my connection?
Thanks

Does anyone know? I have to send it to my parents and I hoped I can set it up before shipping. Here I have DSL internet. Thanks

Here I have dsl PPPoA but comcast cable internet is not PPPoA.
Thanks

PPPoE? In other words, is there any authentication? If not, then you do NOT set it up as you do with ADSL! That's the basis of your entire question...you're a bit vague providing details. Have you tried calling Comcast yet??? I have never had cable, so I do not know how to set up the circuit auth, if any, but I do know it CAN be PPPoE/oA...

Burt

I've worked with Charter cable. There was no authentication required. I don't think I saved the config on the 831, but it was pretty basic. I do recall that it took a lot more than SDM to get the router set up correctly.
