Hey all. I'm working on a wire labeling project and was wondering if there was a good way to capture what IP Address, and MAC address was plugged into a device. I know "show mac address-table" will pull in the MAC Address, but I'm looking for something now that will pull in the IP Address.

If I can get this information, I can gather up the data and sort it so I can figure out what device is plugged into which port, and it will make it a lot easier than tracing every cable to its location, which could take forever.
Thanks for any help.

Is the 4506 the default gateway for the computers? If so, you can input 'show IP arp' and that will provide everything you need. Of course if you have smaller switches trunked into the 4506 then you will need to 'show mac' to narrow it down further.

If the VLANs are defined on another device (as in with the 'interface VLAN' command) then you can run 'show IP arp' on that device, but you will need to combine that with 'show mac' on the 4506 to find the specific ports.

Thanks for your response. I knew about the show arp command, but I did not know about the show ip arp command. I did run the show ip arp command on our gateway and it returned the IP and MAC, so thank you for that.

I do have a question regarding this command though. Are the MAC Addresses listed in the results of this command the MAC addresses of the port, or the devices that are plugged into the port. The only reason I ask is, when I run a "show interface status" on the primary switch, the MAC's don't match up with the "show IP arp" command run from the gateway. Could you help me out a little more?

The MAC addresses listed from 'show IP arp' are, for the most part, the end-nodes or computers. If you'd like, you can do verification through an ipconfig /all or ifconfig through a Unix variant.
The only reason I ask is, when I run a "show interface status" on the primary switch, the MAC's don't match up with the "show IP arp" command run from the gateway.
I don't quite follow you here. 'show int status' will not list MAC address information. 'show interface' will but the MAC address listed there is not the one that will appear in 'show ip arp'. However, there is an exception with the VLAN interface.

If you are getting a lot of duplicate MAC addresses associated with different IP addresses from various VLANs, try this
Code:
show int vlan <#>
Vlan<#> is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is EtherSVI, address is 00ab.cdef.1234 (00ab.cdef.1234)

show ip arp | excl 00ab.cdef.1234
That will trim your results a bit if you have a lot of VLANs defined on the core.

I might be getting off on a tangent though. I can tell you that 'show IP arp' will at least give you the MAC addresses from the NICs on the computers.

Guys,
I changed the config-register to 2102 and now it all works ok as you can see below;

Chanman,

Google sl360 and use the switch mapper feature to map out the ports.
