I have tried doing a no shutdown, power inline auto. The interface always seems to stay shutdown. The device I am connecting is a mitel IP phone.

Any idea's on where I might be going wrong ?

so the phone has no lights or activity when you first plug it in?
Are you plugging directly into the switch bypassing all inhouse wiring?
How much power does the Mitel phone require?

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

There is no activity on the phone at all. Plugging in the phone directly into the switch. The mitel phone supports 802.3af.

And you are sure the phones are using the correct port on the bottom. It's a common error. There is one in and and one out.

If you plugged a PC in do you get a link light.

Yes its definitly connected correctly. Seem like these 3550 inline power can only power cisco phones, and not any other devices.

No the switch supports all IEEE power. Up to 15.4W per port. What else plugged in the switch?
Anything else powering up?
What's the output of this command:
show power inline

I think you'll have trouble with the Mitel handset and this model switch.

Unfortunately you are using an old 3524XL switch (from the show ver) supports Cisco pre-standard PoE only (same as the 3550's). There is no support for IEEE 802.3af.
