I have a new Gigabit Interface Converter and one of the requirements for it to work is the switch needs to have a software release of 12.0(5)XW or higher. My current Software release is 12.0(5)XU is that higher than 12.0(5)XW

I am trying to troubleshoot on why its not regonized by the switch.

U and W usually are special loads for special features. Either use the W code or go to the next point release. 12.1. You can try 12.0.7 as well but the code may not have been ported. You can check out a entire white paper cisco wrote on the IOS Numbering and releases. You can get it from CCO.
