Hi,

I just got a Cisco 2948G from ebay. I think that it is running CatOS. I was trying to get into rommon to reset the password. I was unable to do so. What worries me is that now I get a few amber lights in the front of the switch. I also get the error listed below durning boot. The amber lights were not on when I first booted up the swicth. Please Help!!!

installed. The boot ROM will be left as-is.

Hi All,

I was able to reset the switch (clear config all) after doing some research. Now I would like some help on how I can fix the error message upon bootup.

Thanks in advance!

Will it let you do a "dir bootflash" in rommon ? Sounds like you may need to download a new rommon version along with a new code version. Can you try a "boot bootflash: command and see if it wil load .

Thanks for the info, but I don't know how to use the CatOS. How can I make it boot into rommon? I was able to do a sh flash. I hope this helps.

It looks like it is online , just hit the enter key , it will ask you for a password then just hit the enter key again . To get into config mode just type enable after that, hit the enter key again . Once in config mode it looks like you need to clear the boot statement "clear boot system all" , then set the boot statement with your image "set boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-k8.8-4-1-GLX.bin " . This will set your boot statement so it is not looking for the rommon image anymore , someone tried to upgrade the rommon image for some reason and didn't clear the boot statement afterwards. Not sure what else you want to do with this switch , you would have to post your requirements , all configs are done with "set" based commands , you can get to the config guides right at cisco.com for more info . If you have specific questions post here .

You have a lot of old config files in bootflash taking up a lot of space , i would delete them all then squeeze bootflash . Any file labeled like this "-confg can be deleted.

Vipergg,

Thanks for your assistnace! The switch now boots up without the error. I don't do how to clear the config files. I tried soo many different ways and had no luck.

I wanted to fix this switch up and use it in my lab. Now I want to fix this switch up and sell it. It hard to understand...

Thanks!

If you are just trying to clear those files out of bootflash just do this . Do a "dir bootflash: , this will show you all the files in there and to be honest the only thing that needs to stay in there is this file
cat4000-k8.8-4-1-GLX.bin . That is your catos image file

Do that for every file you want out of bootflash. Once you have done that you have to squeeze bootflash to recover the space , "squeeze bootflash: " , just answer yes to all questions . This could take up to like 10 minutes for this process to run . If you want a completely clean config to start with on the box issue the "clear config all" command this sets it back to factory defaults . Hope this helps...

Some of my previous post is missing , to delete the files in bootflash just issue delete bootflash:<filename> , then "squeeze bootflash: " .

Vipergg,

It appears to be ok now after you helpful tips. When I issue a sh flash it only displays 3 files.

This seems like a cool and quick switch. Now I just need to learn how to configure this switch.

Is it true that this switch is some what like the 6500s?
What is the latest CatOS version for this switch?

Thanks!

The 2948 doesn't have anything in common with the 6k's other than it can run CATOS. That switch was EOS/EOLd over 4 years ago. Every Cisco switch except for the 6k's run IOS, which is vastly different from CATOS.

Your 8.4.1 image is new enough for anything you need to do .
To create vlans

1. set vlan 3

2. To assign ports to the vlan , for a range .This assigns these ports to vlan 3 . Do a show port to verify .
set vlan 3 2/1-48

3. For switch managment and say your management vlan is 3 also

set int sc0 3 <ip address> <mask>

To set your layer 3 default gateway , set to your router address for the vlan.

set ip route default <router address for vlan 3>

For config docs just go to cisco.com and search on configuring catos . The catos commands are pretty much the same for all cat 4000's(which includes 2948,2980) ,5000's and 6000's that run catos . The 6000's will have more features like better QOS features etc..
