Hello,

When I power on the router, it comes up with a set of characters instead of the startup config. What could be causing this problem?

Thanks!

Here's some ideas:
-bad cable
-wrong cable
-bad parameters for connection (use 9600,8,N,1)
-has it been configured with an IP address yet, and if so, can you telnet to it?

Hello,

I check the cables and the parameters and everything seems fine on that front. I am getting this:]S3EbA!!9!);/z _59!))!N!9RR!!uXR19._u:!))as soon as I power on the router. Could it be a bad memory problem?

Try setting your baud from the lowest to the highest and see if you can get that to work. This is most likely stemming from a misconfigured config register setting which should be set at ox2142 or ox2102 as soon as you get it back up.

What are these router user accounts privileges ?

I have set up a user account on a 2500 series and
have set the privilege to 1, the choices are 0-15.

router>en
router#conf t
router(config)#username bob password passwd
router(config)#username bob privilege ?
<0-15> User Privilege level

Where can i find out that these levels mean?

Re-seat you memory - once I had that problem and that fixed it.
