Hopefully someone can help. I have bought a Cisco 2501 router to assist in my CCNA Cert quest. No matter what I do I cannot get it out of Router(boot)> or #... I've tried to do the reg-config changes. I've tried to copy the flash to TFTP, to try and reload, it said it could even find the file and I specified it exactely as the flash displayed. I'm in hurting status now as I can't use a number of the commands in boot mode. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought the Router. Looks like there is no IOS?

Format the flash, then x-modem some new code on it. If it's never booted for you out of the box, that's what I'd do.

I have the same problem but with a 1601 router. How do you format the flash?

first off all, before you format the flash, do you have a copy of an IOS that can be put back onto the router?

please post the output messages from the bootloader (loads the IOS image) that you get when the router is first powered on. someone may be able to help you out of this jam

i have the same problem with my 2501 router. the bootstrap displays
"System bootstrap, version 5.2 (8a), RELEASE SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1995 by cisco systems
2500 processor with 4096 kbytes of main memory

i need this router to work so that i may prepare for techprep and finish my final. any information would be appreciated
thanx,
Ryohiro

Are you saying that your router has no other output besides what you just posted?

there are few fundamental issues in here:
1 on 25xx platform there is no xmodem command in rommon mode
2 the main image runs from flash thus for any ios upgrades we must go into the boot mode

if you are in boot mode just do
r(boot)> en
r(boot)# sh flash:

if any valid image please check your conf register from show ver (last line) and make sure the last digit it is not 1... eg 0x2101.. if so you must change the configuration register value to 0x2102 save and reload... Also look for any bootsytem commands in your configuration file pointing to a different image.
