Hello
I picked up a used cisco 1841 on ebay seller stated it works great etc. and it does but when I opened it up to clean it out I noticed that it was missing a small battery such as a wrist watch battery, also the slot for the memory did not have any memory in there. The router works but I noticed that it has a small delay. Once I type out a command and press enter it takes about 1-2 seconds until I get a response from the router. Is that normal with these routers?

This is probably what the battery looks like that it's missing

Thanks

You need more DRAM it sounds like. That battery is likely a standard CMOS battery, responsible for storing info (NVRAM(?), time, etc.),

Try and configure a small config, like maybe a hostname, verify the config register is at 2102 (sh ver) and set the time and then power off, unplug, wait 20 seconds for all caps to discharge, plug back in, and power on---see if it saves the config. If not, then the battery is responsible for NVRAM having power to store the config. You'll need to replace it.

Post a sh ver to verify flash size and DRAM...if it's too low, I'd give the Ebay dude a poor rating---I always ask for a sh tech, or the very least a sh ver and a sh run.

Hello

I put some basic configuration on the router and it seems like that it has saved it to the memory. So if I wanted still to get an battery where would I get one from? Wallgreens or Wall mart?

I'll get some DRAM memory to add to it as well (but not from wall mart or wallgreens lol)

I also noticed that tyhe 1841 had a USB slot. What ios that used for?

I do have another small question

I also got a 2621XM router with 2 WIC 1DSU T1 cards allready build into it but when I do show ip interface brief I serial interfaces there as well

Router#show ip interface brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Prot
ocol
FastEthernet0/0 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down

Serial0/0 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down

FastEthernet0/1 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down

Serial0/1 unassigned YES NVRAM administratively down down

Router#

Thanks

1.Get the battery from Walgreens or Wal-Mart, but you must ensure you get the proper voltage for the battery---it could damage the router. I would actually not replace it if it works fine---does it keep time as well?

2.The USB slot is for booting a secondary IOS.

3.You see the serial interfaces...what's the question? The WIC-2dsu-T1 WIC has two serial interfaces. They are obviously in the built-in NM (module 0, slots 0 and 1, thus s0/0 and s0/1). The WICs themselves are not built in---they are removable WIC cards, thus giving the description of the 2621 (1700, 1800, 2600, 2800, 3600, 3800 series as well), as a modular router.

HTH

Please star me if I helped?:):):) I could use all I can get!lol

Hello

Thanks for the info You got stars from me :)

The 1841 does keep the configuration but the date is set to january 2005.

I do have a question again

The WIC 1DSU T1 interfaces seem to accept an ethernet cat5e cable that is what confuses me. It does not look like a serial interface it looks like an Ethernet interface im now even more confused than I was a earlier

Also if this is a serial interface can I connect routers together with this interface just like I would with a serial cable?

does that battery explain why my time at work is wrong as well?

The battery is only responsible for time and few other minor things, nvram is similar to eprom thus not requiring any external power to retain data, changing the baud rate to a higher setting will also make it seem like the router is faster as it transmit data faster through the console.

I've looked at the manual but the manual does not specify what type of battery I need to get. Does anyone know what type I need to get?

Those serial interfaces are for T1 lines. You can connect them together by using a T1 crossover cable, with ethernet Cat5e, etc. and RJ-45 connectors. The pinouts are not like ethernet---they are like this (crossover)...

There is no clockrate needed---the clocking is internal on the WICs.

Battery? I dunno...

But that sh ver is from a 2621XM. Try to and set the time in the 1841, and then unplug, etc. and turn it back on, see if it keeps the time or not.

You should not waste that 2621's power! You should acquire a better IOS by emailing me...

Cisco 1841 (revision 6.0) with 116736K/14336K bytes of memory

You add the two numbers there separated by the slash and round to the nearest multiple of 16.

116736+14336=131072. The nearest multiple of 16 from that is 128,000. You have 128MB DRAM and 64MB flash (commonly written as 128/64).

If the image is actually bigger than 62MB, however, it won't fit on the ATA flash card...

Ok now that I have that behind me I wanted to upgrade to a new IOS version, but every time I try I get this error Message from my TFTP Server. Screen shot bellow

I was able to upgrade 2 out of 3 routers using this TFTP Server

Has anyone any idea what could be wrong with the memory?

Thanks

That's a Windows memory error, not the router memory error. Use this tftp server---I love it---best one I have ever used, easiest one...

From my understanding I have 256MB of DRAM and 64MB of Flash how much more do I need to have?

do a sho flash, and see how much space your using. the current ios plus the one you are loading are most likely over 64mb combined, thus you need to delete the current first then load the new one.
